NAACP North Carolina Condemns House Bill 171 as an Attack on Equity and Justice

RALEIGH, NC – NAACP North Carolina strongly condemns House Bill 171, a proposed bill that would ban Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programs in state agencies, undermining efforts to ensure fair opportunities for all North Carolinians.

This bill threatens to reverse vital progress for marginalized communities, particularly Black North Carolinians, and perpetuates discriminatory practices that harm our state’s workforce.

President Deborah Dicks Maxwell issued the following statement:

House Bill 171 is a direct attack on racial and social justice under the guise of ‘fair hiring practices.’ It seeks to eliminate critical initiatives that are necessary to dismantle systemic racism and ensure equal opportunities for all people, regardless of their race, gender, or background.

This bill sends a dangerous message that fairness and inclusion are less important than political agendas.”

NAACP North Carolina calls on the Senate to reject this harmful legislation and work toward policies that uplift, not suppress, the rights and dignity of every North Carolinian.
